Spondylitis
Spondylitis Symptoms
Spondylitis symptoms can differ in different individuals and depend on the severity of the condition. Some common symptoms are:
- Back pain, particularly in the lower back
- Stiffness, which is typically intense upon waking & reduces as the day passes
- Inflammation and/or pain in one or multiple joints
- Inflammation of the intestines, like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
- Enthesitis (inflammation at the point where tendons & ligaments connect to the bone)
Spondylitis Causes
Spondylitis is a prevalent cause of back & neck pain. The underlying spondylitis causes are not entirely understood, but the following factors can raise the risk of developing the condition:
- Age-related degeneration of the vertebrae
- Previous neck injuries
- Osteoporosis-linked microfractures
- Genetic factors
- Infectious ailments, like brucellosis that impact the vertebrae
Spondylitis Diagnosis
There is no particular test for the conclusive diagnosis of spondylitis. The general diagnosis process begins with an enquiry about medical history & symptoms, followed by a physical examination.
The doctor may also inquire about any family history of autoimmune diseases, such as psoriasis & spondyloarthritis.
The following diagnostic tests could also be conducted:
- Blood tests
- Imaging tests, like X-rays, MRI & Ultrasound scans
- Genetic testing for the HLA-B27 gene.
